Amputation Glossary

Acquired amputation - When limbs are surgically removed due to disease or trauma.

AE - Above elbow amputation, also referred to as transhumoral.

AK - Above knee amputation, also referred to as transfemoral.

Amputation - The loss or absence of all or part of a limb.

Bilateral - A double amputee, such as missing either both legs or both arms.

BK - Below knee amputation, also referred to as transtibial.

DAK - Double above knee amputation, which is also referred to as Bilateral transfemoral.

Disarticulation - An amputation through a joint, such as in the hip, knee, ankle, elbow, shoulder, or wrist.

HD (Hemi-pelvectomy) - Hip disarticulation. This type of amputation removes the leg at the hip joint, which leaves the pelvis intact.

Modular prosthesis - This is an artificial limb that is assembled from components where the supporting member is covered with a cosmetic covering that is shaped and finished to resemble the natural limb.

Occupational therapy - A type of therapy in which the patient is trained to maximize his or her independence and function in daily living.

Physical therapy - A type of therapy which evaluates and treats a patient who has a disease, injury or disability through the use of therapeutic exercises to strengthen muscles, improve range of motion, and lessen pain.

Prosthesis - An artificial part of the body.

Residual limb - The remaining portion of a limb after an amputation.

Socket - The portion of prosthesis that fits around the residual limb and attaches it to the prosthetic components.

Transtarsal amputation - Partial foot amputation through the tarsal (tarsus) or foot bones.
